April 2019.
My wife gets a Pixel 2 — at that point a two-year-old model, and as Wikipedia tells us, discontinued April 1, 2019.
Despite not having the very latest processor and “only” 4 GB of RAM, the phone performs on par with the newer and more powerful OnePlus 6, and on top of that takes wonderful photos with its single camera, recognizes speech on the fly during phone calls (call screening) — in short, a delight.
February 2020.
A second Pixel 2 is acquired (they’ve also dropped significantly in price over the year). Over that year the OnePlus 6 went off to a new happy owner, and the OnePlus 7 Pro failed to meet expectations — in frustration it ended up on a shelf (nobody wanted to buy it), and a second second Pixel stepped in to replace it. The three-year-old phone still takes great photos (including Live Photos and Portrait mode), handles all kinds of Outlooks, messengers, and navigation apps without slowing down, without glitching, without anything crashing, and gets regular updates to the latest Android.
