“Set up a VPN home” has been sitting in my to-do list for a long time.
It settled in and had no intention of going anywhere — first nobody left the house during the pandemic, then more urgent tasks kept showing up. And then someone in a chat reminded me of a service I had already heard of before, and heard only good things about — Tailscale
In short, for home use — it’s kind of like a successor (and an improvement) to Hamachi LogMeIn, if anyone still remembers that. The author of Tailscale was inspired by Hamachi and wanted to get rid of its shortcomings — and by his own account, succeeded.
Haven’t tried adding anyone to my networks yet, but by installing their app on a Synology, MacBook, iPad, and iPhone — it immediately solved several remote access problems:
- access to shared folders on the MacBook
backupphoto backup from my phone to the Synology- watching videos via Plex on the tablet
Well, with a minimum of effort everything works out of the box and covers my needs to a fair degree. We’ll see how it goes from here.
